Still Life is a must do for all painters.  It teaches focus on a small object, composition, the play of light and dark, the making of some inert object seem alive.  Fruit, vegetables, flowers, tools, all are worthy subjects.  I try to present them with an edge, put them somewhere not expected, change their character, and other times paint them as they are.  Still life is study time, like going back to school.
